DETROIT -- President-elect Barack Obama’s name is in lights, and has been for months in the Motor City.
The Obama Oil corner gas station at Wyoming Street and Plymouth Road in Detroit has been “pumping” up customers for the candidate's win.
The owners of the independent gas station re-branded a few months ago, including the roof, the sign, the pumps and even the awnings.
"From day one I supported him. He's my president," said station owner Sam Bazzi. "I have my dream and my dream came true."
"When I first seen it, I wanted to cry," said customer Tangela Harris.
The station fueled a spontaneous celebration Tuesday night after Obama was declared the winner.
"I am so proud today to be called an American because this man [Obama] won," said Neal Washington. "Now we're gonna show you how to make a difference in the United States. Obama for Detroit."
The owners of the gas station said they won’t mess with success, and plan on re-branding more stations.
A clerk told Local 4 that the gas station was in place during Obama's visit to the city on Labor Day and that his motorcade drove past it. The clerk said Obama's campaign called them after to tell them that although they could not stop for security reasons, Obama had seen the station.
