NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Fire crews rescued several people from their cars Thursday afternoon after telephone poles fell and live wires landed on top of three vehicles.
Beck Road south of 6 Mile Road in Northville Township will remain closed while crews try to restore power to more than 200 people.
DTE crews turned off the power and rescued a mother and three children from a minivan and two other people from their vehicles.
DTE crews said 13,000 volts of electricity were running through the live wires, and the people could not exit the cars without risking electrocution.
Christian Orlando was trapped inside his Ford Escort for almost an hour while live wires burned holes on the rooftop of his car.
Orlando's long hair was singed while he sat in the car. He said he was just concentrating on his smoldering car.
"I look at this as a very expensive -- very nice story to tell my grandkids one day," said Orlando.
Nobody was injured.
Fire investigators said a garbage truck hit one power line on Beck Road, which created a domino effect and took down six poles with it. The wires landed on the cars.
Police said it was amazing none of the victims panicked and tried to jump out of the cars.
DTE crews said electricity has been restored to the area. Crews are now working to put up new poles. Residents are still waiting to get their cable and telephone service restored.
