17-year-old girl accused of hitting man, driving away while drunk in Macomb Township
Girl to be tried as adult in Macomb County
A teenager's bad decision has turned into serious trouble for her and a tragedy for another family.
A girl is suspected of drinking while driving and is accused leaving the scene of an accident after hitting a man in Macomb Township near 21 Mile and Garfield roads about midnight Tuesday morning.
Another driver found the victim in the middle of the road. That driver called 911 to report what he saw.
"I was just going south on Garfield and I see car pieces everywhere and there's a guy laying in the middle of the road here," the caller told 911.
The victim was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he remains in extremely critical condition. He suffered from severe head injuries and upper body and leg injuries from being hit. The impact knocked the shoes off of his body, and he was left lying on the ground unable to speak or find help.
He was walking on the crosswalk to the 7-Eleven across the street when the car hit him.
Macomb County Sherriff Anthony Wickersham says a car full of teens who were drinking alcohol were driving northbound on Garfield with a 17-year old girl at the wheel.
"They all knew in the vehicle that they struck somebody," Wickersham said. "And one of the statements is that her friend actually told her to call 911 and for whatever reason she decided to go home and talk to her mother first."
The teens, who legally can't drink alcohol, left the desolate scene while a seriously injured man lay on the ground, bleeding and unconscious.
"We don't know how long that individual was laying in the roadway until a passerby saw him and called 911," Wickersham said.
While emergency crews tended to him and took him to the nearby Henry Ford Hospital, the girl called 911 to say that she was the driver.
"She was brought in, she was booked, we did a search warrant for blood per the prosecutor's office," Wickersham said. "Then she was released pending the outcome of those results."
Police are waiting for the results of that test, which should take a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, the prosecutor is monitoring the man who was hit, because his status will matter greatly in determining the types of charges the 17-year old will face.
Whatever the charges are, she will be charged as an adult.
