Statement from victim's school:

Dear Friends,
There is a deep sadness at Detroit Cristo Rey today. This morning, Cortez Burrell, a member of the Class of 2015 passed away. This past Friday morning, a fire destroyed the Burrell home. In the fire, Cortez's younger brother Quartez, age 12, was killed. Cortez suffered serious injuries from smoke inhalation and never regained consciousness.

The Burrell family also includes Leathra and Le'Reatha -- who are sophomores at Detroit Cristo Rey. Fortunately, they were not home at the time of the fire.

After learning of the fire Friday morning, we shared the news with our students and quickly notified our work partners, since Friday was the work day for Cortez's fellow seniors.  I was overwhelmed by the kindness of our partners as they offered prayers for the Burrell family and comfort to the students at work. Friday afternoon, I visited the hospital and spoke with the Burrell family. I tried to convey to the family how many people are praying for them.  I think it helped them find some comfort.

Many people have reached out to me asking about ways to financially assist the family. Detroit Cristo Rey is going to set up a separate account for donations that people would like to make. We will work with the family to use the money to address their most pressing financial issues - including medical expenses, burial costs and housing relocation costs.

If you would like to make a donation online, please use the "Donate Now" button and enter Cortez in the dedication line.

If you prefer to make a donation by check, it can be made payable to Detroit Cristo Rey High School and mailed to the school at 5679 West Vernor, Detroit, MI 48209. Please note Cortez in the memo line. If you have any questions about this fund, please do not hesitate to contact me.
As always, I ask that you continue to pray for the entire Detroit Cristo Rey family and especially the Burrell family.

Michael Khoury, president
