17-year-old girl killed in Warren house fire

WARREN, Mich. – A 17-year-old girl was killed Monday in a fire that consumed a home on Austin Drive near 13 Mile Road in Warren. Fire officials say the flames started shortly after 4 p.m.

Investigators say the fire started in the attached garage where something was being cooked. It then spread throughout the entire house, even burning the family's car.

"We had heavy fire involvement upon the arrival of our first crews," said Battalion Chief John Dalton of the Warren Fire Department. "We had one victim that was removed from the house and transported to the hospital."

Several others were inside, but they all got out before fire crews arrived.

After crews got the fire under control, they pulled the 17-year-old girl from the basement. The teen and a second woman were taken to the hospital, where the young girl eventually died.

People who live nearby say they're great neighbors and they often had friends and family visit.

"It's just too bad that we didn't know earlier so we could have told the firemen," said Don Kudla. "The firemen didn't know until 15 minutes after they were here, and that's what made it so bad."

Fire officials also say propane in the gas grill and gasoline in the car in the garage caused several explosions, which made the fire worse and spread to the rest of the house.
