18-year-old accused of accidentally shooting, killing brother at Detroit home goes to court

DETROIT – Aavaire Johnson will face a judge Wednesday after his 16-year-old brother Shawn Johnson died a few days before Christmas.

Shawn Johnson allegedly was shot by his 18-year-old brother, Aavaire, on the morning of Dec. 21. Investigators believe Aavaire was playing with the gun when he pointed it at Shawn and pulled the trigger.

Shawn died during surgery. Now Aavaire is being held criminally responsible. He is charged with manslaughter, aiming a gun without malice, careless discharge of a firearm and felony firearm.

Johnson faces a preliminary examination Wednesday to see what evidence exists. It's scheduled to get underway about 9 a.m.
