18-year-old Commerce Township man collapses playing basketball at gym, dies

Bryson Salem rushed from gym to hospital, but pronounced dead

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An 18-year-old man collapsed and died while playing basketball at a fitness club in Commerce Township.

Bryson Salem was rushed Tuesday from LifeTime Fitness to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was a graduate of Walled Lake Central High School and was studying pre-dentistry at the University of Detroit- Mercy.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Brandon Salem, Bryson's brother, said he is not happy with the response time from the gym staff after his brother collapsed.

"It took them 25 minutes for LifeTime Fitness to go ahead and call 911," Brandon said. "People are saying it wasn't even employees (who called 911). If someone passes out you want to get on top of that right away. Let alone, none of the employees could give him CPR? Which they are supposed to be trained to do. Which kind of upsets me because we wouldn't be in this position today."
