DETROIT -- Funeral arrangements have been made for an 11-year-old southwest Detroit boy who was shot to death by his 12-year-old friend last week, police said.
The 12-year-old boy and his father were charged last week in the 11-year-old's death.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged the 12-year-old as a juvenile with careless reckless discharge.
Police said the boys had a handgun in their possession and were apparently playing with the gun when it went off and struck the 11-year-old in the chest.
Police said Gino Solomon Sr. is the owner of the gun and he has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Solomon is the father of the alleged shooter.
The victim's grandfather drove him to the nearest police station in River Rouge, where officers rushed him to Wyandotte Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Neighbor Lawrence Thomas said the two were friends and that the shooting must have been an accident.
"They were best friends. They were always together and they were real close," Thomas said.
Police said the two attended Boynton Middle School.
The viewing for the 11-year-old will be held on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Kernan Funeral Home on Fort Street in Lincoln Park. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Union Second Baptist Church in River Rogue.
