WARREN, Mich. -- A Warren woman accused of drugging her two children before setting her house on fire will undergo a psychiatric exam to see if she is competent to stand trial.
Macomb County District Judge Jennifer Faunce on Tuesday ordered the exam for 32-year-old Tanya Laura Friedly.
Friedly is charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and one count of arson.
Police say Friedly slipped her 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter medication in their hot chocolate on Nov. 18 before setting the house on fire. The children escaped and called 911.
"When I pulled up to the house two kids were standing out front, one had a cell phone in his hand," said Jerry Deck. "So I went in the front room and she had her hands over her face and was just wandering around the front room. I think she was looking for a way out."
Deck said he grabbed Friedly and pulled her out onto the porch. Deck said the whole time Friedly didn't say one word.
Relatives of Friedly’s boyfriend said in no way would she hurt her children. "Like everyone else in the world, they were going through some financial troubles," Ken Hartwell told Local 4.
Defense attorney David Pietroski says Friedly is a "super mom."
