DETROIT -- Detroit's historic Fort Shelby Hotel reopened Monday after decades of abandonment and decay, revamped by a $90-million renovation.
The newly refurbished Doubletree Guest Suites Fort Shelby/Detroit Downtown hotel has 203 rooms and more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space.
The Finn & Porter Restaurant, Round Bar, a sushi bar from executive chef Bradley Durr, and Chelsea, Mich.-based Bearclaw Coffee Co. all occupy space to feed guests.
The building also has 53 apartments on its upper floors.
The hotel originally opened in 1917 and closed in the 1970s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The hotel was named after a British-built military fort that was at the location during the War of 1812.
The hotel joins another newly restored Detroit landmark, the Book Cadillac Hotel, which reopened in October as a Westin hotel.
