Snow, Low Temps. Linger In S.E. Michigan

Cities Call Snow Emergencies

POSTED: Thursday, December 18, 2008
UPDATED: 4:19 pm EST December 21, 2008

Fresh snow hit Michigan Sunday just as residents were digging out from up to 13 inches of snow that fell on Friday.

Most of southeast Michigan only accumulated one to two more inches of snow, but temperatures are expected to stay into the single digits and even go below zero with blustery winds.

Across the state, Sunday's snow mixed with low temperatures caused icy conditions that are being blamed for at least 30 vehicles to crash and forcing police to close a six-mile stretch of Interstate 94 near Lake Michigan.

The wintery weather began Friday when a major storm lashed Michigan's Lower Peninsula, snarling roads and freeways and sending thousands of school children home a day early for holiday break.

A winter storm warning was in effect for most of Friday for a large part of the peninsula, including the Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint and Detroit areas. Up to 10 inches of snow fell throughout the area.

Hundreds of schools called off classes throughout the state, and numerous traffic accidents were reported.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport spokesman Mike Conway told Local 4 News there were some flight delays and cancellations.

Road commissions mobilized snow plows and salting teams as heavy snow started to fall before daybreak and worked throughout the day to clean up the mess.

Macomb County has about 70 salt trucks on the roads, Oakland County has mobilized 120 trucks, and Wayne County has sent out 140 trucks.

The predicted snowfall total would threaten a record for the date set in 1973, when 8.7 inches fell at the airport.

The city of Detroit and many other metro Detroit cities declared a snow emergency Friday morning, which prohibits parking on marked emergency routes used by fire trucks and ambulances to allow proper snowplowing.

The whipping winds weren't strong enough to help qualify the storm for blizzard status. That requires a three-hour storm with frequent 35 mph wind gusts and visibility at a quarter-mile or less, said Rich Pollman, a weather service meteorologist.

In many parts of lower Michigan, snow fell at the rate of 1-2 inches per hour.

Areas of fog added to the driving difficulties near Grand Rapids in southwestern Michigan.

"I live for days like this," Bruce Bitely, director of maintenance for the Kent County Road Commission, told The Grand Rapids Press. The commission dispatched 125 drivers to work on the roads Friday morning.

"Everybody we have is on the road. Every available person we have in the engineering and mechanical divisions is out there driving trucks."

In extreme southwestern Michigan, freezing rain and sleet combined with snow to knock out power in some areas and make driving even more hazardous.
