WARREN, Mich. -- Officials in one Detroit area community are considering laws aimed at people who text-message, shave or apply makeup while driving.
The Macomb Daily in Mount Clemens reports that the Warren City Council is expected in January to discuss a proposed ordinance fining motorists $500 for distracted driving.
The city's legal department has drafted laws that only allow drivers with handsfree equipment to use cell phones.
"It's not a huge imposition...to ask a driver to pull over" before sending or reading such messages, City Attorney David Richards told the paper.
Police would not be authorized to stop motorists solely for suspected hands-on cell phone use, but could pull someone over if they are caught sending or receiving text messages.
The council also could consider a broader measure aimed at people who eat, drink or use laptop computers while driving.
