WSU Seeks To Revive Seldom-Used Words

POSTED: Monday, January 5, 2009
UPDATED: 2:53 pm EST January 5, 2009

Some might call a quest to revive seldom-used words quixotic or supercilious. For others, it's no less than resplendent.

Like it or not, Wayne State University would be pleased to see or hear any of the above words more often.

They all appear on the Detroit university's Web site, "Word Warriors," which plays off the school's nickname, Warriors.

It seeks to rejuvenate "words of style and substance that see far too little use."

The idea emerged from a casual lunch conversation between the Wayne State associate vice president for marketing and communications, dean of the Honors College, director of editorial services, and a journalism instructor.

The site accepts online nominations, just as another Michigan university does. But Lake Superior State University wants words or phrases that should be banned for overuse, misuse and "general uselessness."

The school released its 34th version last week containing 15 entries selected from about 5,000 nominations.

This year's banned list includes "green" and "maverick."
