HARPER WOODS, Mich. -- A 14-year is in custody after carjacking a man at gunpoint in a store parking lot, Harper Woods police said.
Police said the carjacking happened at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Home Depot near Eight Mile and Kelly roads in Harper Woods.
Police said the teen carjacked a 2007 red Dodge pickup truck and led police on a chase before crashing into an undercover police car at Fairview Avenue and Charlevoix Street in Detroit.
"The juvenile took off in the vehicle. As our cars were responding one of the security personnel told us they saw the vehicle going eastbound on Vernier Road," said Harper Woods Police Chief Randolph Skotarczyk.
The teen drove through fields and city blocks trying to elude police, until he crashed into an undercover police car.
"The most terrifying thing is the imminent danger to the public, for someone's life or property. It's just hard to imagine," Skotarczyk said. "Fortunately the driver gave it up without a fight."
Police said the teen was taken into custody and they recovered a handgun in the truck.
Detectives are looking into information that the teen may be involved in other carjackings in the last several days.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Harper Woods Police Department at 313-343-2530.
