Plus-Size Lingerie Shop Struggles To Open

POSTED: Monday, January 12, 2009
UPDATED: 9:19 am EST January 13, 2009

An intimate apparel business owner for plus-size women said she struggled to find a place to set up shop in Redford Township.

"Put it like this, any intimate apparel. From house shoes to heels, to heels with the furry on top, sexy lingerie, even exotic lingerie, I carry it," said Fancy Lingerie Plus LLC owner Rochelle Allen.

Allen, whose Web site currently carries all of her apparel plus some other intimate body products, said she originally looked at a location for her store across from City Hall, but officials vetoed that idea.

Allen said officials have been giving her a hard time for months about places she could set up shop.

"I mean, if I open up my store in Redford, are they going to try and ticket my customers? Tow their cars away? Are they going to put speeding traps up?" Allen said. "I have to look at things like that but I also look at it as anything worth having is worth fighting for. I'm going to continue to fight."

Allen got word Monday that she would be able to occupy space in what used to an adult entertainment store. But the city said she would not be able to sell any adult toys, books, magazines, games or videos. The city added that any mannequins in the windows would need to be properly covered.

The city said they just want to make sure things stay classy.

Allen said she agrees and truly believes she's fulfilling a much-needed niche.

"It's actually for plus-size women, it's like encouraging and building self-esteem," she said. "I'm plus-size myself, I'm married, and, you know, I got to please my husband."
