Barle Makes Debut At Detroit Zoo

Polar Bear Was Abused In Puerto Rican Circus

POSTED: Friday, December 20, 2002
UPDATED: 7:50 pm EST December 20,2002

It was an exiciting day at the Detroit Zoo as Barle the polar bear made her debut at the Arctic Ring of Life exhibit.

Barle was living in a 100-degree cage in Puerto Rico just one month ago. But after months of protests, the U.S. government finally seized her and five other bears and shipped them to the United States.

The bears were routinely beaten and abused in a circus in Puerto Rico, according to officials.

The Detroit Zoo volunteered to take Barle, and on Friday she was introduced into her new home.

Zoo officials say she's a bit stiff and sore, and she'll still have to learn the basics of healthy polar bear life.

"She's gonna have to learn how swim. But she's exploring. She's very curious and that's a very good sign," said Ron Kagan, Director of the Detroit Zoo.

Barle is being kept separate from the other polar bears, but as soon as she gets used to her new environment, she'll have seven new friends to play with.
