Kilpatrick Returns To Mich.

Former Mayor Served 99 Days Behind Bars

POSTED: Tuesday, February 3, 2009
UPDATED: 8:39 am EST February 10, 2009

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is back in Michigan after job hunt in Dallas.

He returned to his mother, Democratic U.S Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick's home in Detroit on Monday night.

He went to Dallas last Tuesday for a job interview and to reunite with his wife and children.

There is no word yet if he did get a job or with what company he had an interview with. His attorneys could be back in Wayne County Circuit Court this week asking for permission for Kilpatrick to move to Dallas permanently.

Kilpatrick was released from the Wayne County Jail just hours before he flew to Texas.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Kilpatrick walked out of the jail without uttering a word to the crowd of community members and the media who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the embattled former mayor.

Kilpatrick was escorted by Florida attorney Willie Gary and his defense attorney James Thomas.

"I instructed him (Kilpatrick) not to talk to anybody. Like it or not, I'm the new sheriff in town," said Gary.

Gary, gregarious and wealthy by reputation, is speculated by Local 4 sources to be working with Kilpatrick on a civil suit against SkyTel -- the company who released text messages from Kilpatrick's city-issued pager to a Detroit newspaper that eventually led to his perjury charge conviction.

Gary told the media that they will be looking into the treatment of Kilpatrick while he was in jail. He did not confirm whether any lawsuits will be filed. "We are looking at anything along the way that may have violated his rights," Gary said.

Gary also said Kilpatrick is not bitter, and that he's learned a lot.

"This has been an experience he will never forget," Gary said. "Because of it, he thinks he will be a better person."

Members of the crowed outside the jail shouted, "We love you, Kwame. Detroit loves you, baby."

Kilpatrick, displaying a hearty beard, reportedly lost nearly 30 pounds during his stay in jail, sources told Local 4.

Kilpatrick dodged the advancement of media cameras to slip into a dark Chevy Suburban before making his exit.

Kilpatrick served 99 days of a 120-day sentence he received in October after pleading guilty to two perjury charges and pleading no contest to an assault charge.

During Kilpatrick's second term as Detroit's mayor, sexually-explicit text messages were published by the Detroit Free Press that contradicted sworn testimony Kilpatrick and his then-Chief of Staff Christine Beatty had given during a whistle-blower lawsuit in 2007 that cost the city $8.4 million.

The messages showed the two had lied about firing a Detroit police officer and about a romantic affair.

Beatty resigned from her position in February while Kilpatrick resigned as mayor in September.

Beatty was sentenced in January to a 120-day sentence after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice charges.

What's Next For Former Detroit Mayor?

After his immediate release, Kilpatrick spent time at his mother's home in Detroit.

But a Wayne County Circuit judge ruled last week that Kilpatrick would be allowed to travel after his release, as requested by Kilpatrick's defense team, but did not make the destination public.

Perhaps by slip-up, Thomas mentioned Texas.

Sources told Local 4 that the former mayor has a job interview in Dallas on Wednesday.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Kilpatrick met with Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert before he started serving his sentence. A Dallas blogger said, "First George W. Bush now Kwame Kilpatrick. Dallas -- how lucky can one city get?"

None of Kilpatrick's attorneys would comment on when the former mayor plans to leave the state.

He is court-ordered to return to Detroit by Feb. 9 and would need court approval to transfer his 5-year probation sentence outside Michigan.

"The former mayor ... he wishes the city well, all the people of Detroit well and that there are no hard feelings one way or the other," Gary said.
