SYLVAN LAKE, Mich. -- A woman is jailed and charged with biting a West Bloomfield police officer during a scuffle Thursday.
Lashawn Hicks was arraigned Friday on charges of assault with intent to murder, committing a felony with a firearm and resisting an officer and causing injury.
West Bloomfield police said they received an alarm call at about 11:30 a.m. for a house on Littletell Avenue in Sylvan Lake. Police said when officers arrived, they found Hicks on the street without a coat and went to approach her to see if she needed any help.
"She had her back to him at the time talking on the cell phone," said West Bloomfield Police Lt. Carl Fuhs. "When he approached he was about an arm's length away... she turned around, she had a pistol in her hand."
Police said shots were fired from the pistol when the officer grabbed Hicks' arm in an attempt to disarm her. The officer managed to wrestle her to the ground. During the scuffle she dropped the gun, her cell phone, and came out of her shoes. Hicks also allegedly bit the officer.
"He did suffer some injuries from the scuffle," Fuhs said, "and also she did bite him pretty, pretty good."
Neighbors were stunned by the confrontation. "All I know is, I just saw her go running down the road," said Richard, a homeowner who declined to give his last name. "They (police) roped off all the streets. They had SWAT here, SWAT had my neighbor over there, (the officers) were all in his yard."
Homeowners were told to stay in their homes during the ordeal and no traffic was allowed in or out of the area. "This was actually very surprising to me," said homeowner Deonna Ray. "They need to make sure she's not delusional."
It is still not clear what triggered the attack. Police said they were called to the home earlier this week because of a domestic dispute.
During her Friday arraignment, Hicks repeatedly shook her head and muttered that she did not commit a crime.
A judge said Hicks poses a danger to the community and ordered Hicks held under a $1.5 million bond.
