DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich -- A man suspected of driving drunk is dead after a police chase, a crash and a shooting.
Inkster police were involved in the pursuit of a Jeep at the Inkster/Dearborn Heights border around 8:15 a.m. Friday.
The chase began in Inkster and reached the northbound Southfield Service Drive a few blocks north of Outer Drive where Dearborn Heights police joined the pursuit chasing the vehicle into Allen Park.
Officers boxed in the vehicle near the onramp to the Southfield Freeway, according to officials.
An officer approached the driver, who then pressed the gas pedal and attempted to drive away and hit the officer, said Capt. Jeff Seipenko of the Dearborn Heights Police Department.
"That vehicle tried to run the officer over. The officer fired shots. The suspect was shot in the vehicle," said Seipenko.
A nearby gas station attendant said he heard the commotion.
"So like, five shots. But I didn't know who got shot, the cops or the guy who drive the car," said Saffa Nasser.
The driver was taken to a local hospital where he died.
Michigan state police are investigating.
The officer was not injured but is on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
Southbound lanes of M-39, Southfield Freeway at Outer Drive were closed for most of the morning, but have reopened.
