DETROIT -- Detroit Councilman Kwame Kenyatta said Council President Monica Conyers, who is known for her brash comments, made fun of his hearing, his lack of college degree and started rumors that he has cancer during a confrontation outside his office.
Kenyatta called the confrontation petty, but classical Conyers, "unprofessional, disrespectful and insensitive."
The council member said the argument erupted when Conyers came to his office and demanded that his budget be cut after Kenyatta told her and council that he did not agree with her decision to fire a city administrative worker.
Kenyatta said he believes Conyers fired the employee in retaliation because the person was doing their job and filled a FOIA request for the media.
Kenyatta said Conyers accused him of being disrespectful to women. "She said, 'I needed to learn to talk to a woman,' I said, 'I do when I am talking to one.'"
Kenyatta said Conyers rattled off the rude comments after he told her he wanted to see her budget cut request in writing.
"She began to say I was dumb, stupid, couldn't hear, had cancer and didn't graduate from college," said Kenyatta.
Watch Raw Interview Of Kenyatta About Conyers Confrontation Conyers had to be restrained by her staff member and an officer assigned to protecting her, said Kenyatta.
"She was trying to walk up on me," he said.
Conyers did not deny the insults, but released a statement saying that at no point during the meeting did she have to be restrained.
Conyers was not at work Wednesday but she did issue a memo to council members titled, "My Sincere Apology."
"I would like to apologize for my response to your comments," she said in the letter to the entire council.
Kenyatta said her apology was insincere. "If that's what she calls an apology – I reject it," he said.
"Your public verbal announcement of me having cancer is false. Furthermore, your additional remarks regarding my graduation and hearing issues were completely despicable," Kenyatta said in a letter to Conyers.
Other Detroit public officials are also condemning Conyers behavior.
Former Democratic Floor Leader and state representative Mary Waters said the council president owes all cancer victims and hearing impaired people an apology.
"I am a breast cancer survivor. I have endured chemotherapy and radiation treatments and a serious operation. … I pray that Conyers shall never have to go through what so many of us have gone through," said Waters.
Conyers is no stranger to controversy and other recent outburst have drawn harsh criticism.
Last year, Conyers called then Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. "Shrek" during a televised question and answer session.
Also, a former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick staff member filed a police report claiming Conyers threatened him with a gun during a board meeting.
Conyers, the wife of Rep. John Conyers, is known for being volatile and unpredictable.
In September, an unapologetic Conyers said she is working on controlling her temper after she called a reporter "evil."
Kenyatta said there are no provisions in the city charter that can call for the council's removal of their president for her volatile behavior.
"People need to go to the polls and remove her from office," said Kenyatta.
