Parvovirus is a viral disease that affects dogs, mostly puppies.
It affects the intestinal lining and can prevent the animal from absorbing important nutrients.
It is transmitted by other dogs' fecal matter and is highly contagious. It takes about 7-10 days from time of exposure to start showing symptoms.
Symptoms include: diarrhea, depression, vomiting, lethargy, high fever, and loss of appetite and suppression of white blood cells.
In more serious cases, it can affect the heart muscle and lead to death, especially in young puppies.
Veterinarians recommend all puppies to be vaccinated against Parvo.
If they do contract it, there is no cure. They will be placed on antibiotics.
Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, and other black and tan breeds are more susceptible to getting Parvo. But no dog is immune to it.
