Man Pleads Not Guilty In Casino Scare

Customers Allowed To Retrieve Cars After 6-Hour Investigation

POSTED: Sunday, April 19, 2009
UPDATED: 7:00 pm EDT April 22, 2009

A 70-year-old man accused of leaving suspicious packages at Motor City Casino Sunday night pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Ernie Nowicki posted a $50,000 bond and was released on a GPS tether. He will be back in court on April 30.

Nowicki was arrested around 1 a.m. Monday at his Eastpointe home.

"I heard 'Get down, get down,' and saw 10 officers with their guns drawn," said Nowicki's neighbor Patrice Cooper. "He was half-dressed and had his hands on his head."

Authorities reviewed security video as part of an investigation that included the Michigan State Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said Detroit Police Spokesman James Tate.

"He has not revealed a motive," said Tate, who added that no explosive devices were found in Nowicki's home.

Police on Sunday found half a dozen devices in the garage. They were detonated electronically at a safe distance from the casino.

None of the packages at MotorCity turned out to be explosives; however, authorities were not revealing the contents of the parcels.

Police said officers and ATF agents also checked security at the MGM Grand and Greektown casinos downtown.

Nowicki was allegedly caught on surveillance camera dropping a suspicious package off in garage B.

The video shows Nowicki "get inside his vehicle, as well as exit the interior of the casino into the garage," Tate said.

"He's also seen on surveillance dropping off various objects," Tate said. "He was very cognizant of anyone around him."

Cooper said she is surprised that her neighbor was linked with the crime because he seems very normal.

"He seemed like a pretty stable guy. This is so unexpected," said Cooper.

The four-story garage was closed about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, and patrons weren't allowed to retrieve their cars until 11:15 p.m. Officials said the casino itself wasn't considered in danger and therefore wasn't evacuated.

Later, they allowed customers to leave but they could not get their cars from the garage because of the ongoing investigation.

Patrons had to be picked up at exits on the opposite side the parking garage.

Patrons were given complimentary food and beverages while they Waited.

Unfortunately for the casino, the whole ordeal may have a lasting and negative side effects.

“I don’t even need to be in there anyway. In the casino, losing my money,” said Kevin Ford.
