WARREN, Mich. -- A former Center Line High School and soccer coach was charged with having sexual relations with a 17-year-old student.
Jeffery Barbieri turned himself in Monday morning after an arrest warrant for third-degree criminal sexual conduct was issued against him Friday. He was arraigned on the charges shortly after.
Prosecutors said Barbieri, or "Mr. B" as students called him, met with a 17-year-old female student four times between February 2009 and April 2009 at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel in Warren.
Investigators believe the teacher and the student had sexual intercourse at least twice.
Centerline Teacher Accused Of Having Sex With Student "The defendant was an employee of the school the school district where the victim was a student and used his status to gain or to establish a relationship with the victim," Rob Wroblewski with Center Line Public Safety.
Authorities first learned of the allegations when a student told school officials that the girl told her friends she'd had sex with the teacher.
A student told Local 4 she was shocked to hear the allegations.
"Wow, that is crazy. I wouldn't have expected something like that," said Center Line High School student Sarah Petero.
"I don't know about the incident and I don't know about either side of the story -- I wish the school had contacted us," said a Center Line parent named Erika.
The district did send out an E-mail to parents later in the day Friday.
Barbieri could face up to 15 years in prison if he is convicted on the charges against him.
Barbieri has been with the school district for four years. He is married and has a toddler.
