ROSEVILLE, Mich. -- A trailer containing thousands of dollars in camping supplies for some metro Detroit boy scouts has been stolen.
The trailer was parked at a business that was donating the space to house it near Groesbeck Highway and 12 Mile Road in Roseville.
Grosse Pointe Troop 96's Scoutmaster Dan Roeske said whoever took the trailer knew what they were doing.
"The hitch was locked with a lock and the trailer was also chained to a beam that supports a car port," Roeske said. "So it was under a car port, well lit, locked with a chain, locked with a lock."
The troop has 45 members, boys ranging in age from 11 to 17.
"For us, the important things are three patrol boxes, handcrafted," Roeske said. "They carry the camping gear, the pots and pans, stoves, cooking utensils, and each group of boys have one that they use."
In addition to camping gear, Roeske said a few items of sentimental value to the troop was stolen with the trailer.
"There's what the kids call a 'trailer monkey,' a stuffed monkey that is a member of the troop and wears one of our bandanas and has been in the troop for about 20 years," Roeske said. "As well as a 'goof stick,' a dance stick that we use for skits and activities around campfires."
Roeske said the stick has been in the troop for 40 years.
Roeske said there is a planned camping trip in two weeks, and that the troop will figure out how to make it work.
The stolen trailer's Michigan license plate number is A266189.
There is a $1,250 reward for anyone with information that leads to the return of the trailer and conviction of whoever is responsible.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roseville Police Department.
