Fishermen May Be Key In Nevaeh Case

Search For Missing Girl, 5, Continues

POSTED: Saturday, May 30, 2009
UPDATED: 8:24 pm EDT June 15, 2009

The search for the person responsible for the death of a 5-year-old Monroe girl is taking a turn.

Police said they are hoping a particular group of people will help solve the mystery of who kidnapped and killed Nevaeh Buchanan.

Thousands of tips have been called in since Buchanan’s body was discovered, found encased in cement by a fisherman along the River Raisin on June 4.

Guy Bickley, 52, and his father, Lowell Kirk, were fishing on the river near Ida Maybee Road and spotted a block of poured cement and noticed a bad smell.

Bickley said he chipped away a piece of the cement, revealing what appeared to be human skin.

It is local fishermen like Bickley and Kirk that police and the FBI said might have seen something along the river when Nevaeh disappeared.

Jason Pierce said he’s spent lots of time on the river.

“People do go there and fish. I’ve seen signs and fishermen all over there,” he said.

Gino Dalessio said he’s been interviewed by the FBI four times. He said he was one of the last people to see the girl, playing outside the Charlotte Arms Apartments.

“She was in there, playing,” Dalessio said, pointing to a corner of the parking lot. “Playing with another little boy … there was a lot of kids out here, they were just playing.”

Nevaeh’s mother, Jennifer Buchanan, said she last her when she left the apartment to visit a friend on May 24. "Mom, I'm going upstairs to ... play a game," Jennifer Buchanan quoted her daughter as saying.

Nevaeh’s funeral was held Saturday.

A $20,000 reward has already been offered in the case through an abduction task force.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the FBI at 734-243-7070, or the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-243-7070.
