DETROIT -- A local Chevrolet dealer has reached out to help the family of a boy who is suffering from brain cancer.
A donation from Pat Moran will allow the Edgerton family to replace a specialized wheelchair that was stolen along with the family's van last week from their Hazel Park home.
Robin Edgerton, a custodian at Trinity Lutheran School in Clinton Township, is also 9-year-old River's adopted father.
He said the family's van was stolen June 8, and in it was his son's custom-made wheelchair.
"I go to work every day, I don't bother anybody and I don't see why anyone would do that," Edgerton said Monday.
Edgerton said his son doesn't walk, or talk, and that the wheelchair is his only way of getting around.
"He's blind in one eye, he's very very small and the wheelchair was made to fit him," Edgerton said.
The chair cost about $2,700, and is not covered by insurance.
After Local 4 aired the story, an outpouring of support came from the community.
Moran declined to be interviewed because he said the focus should remain on River.
But the family spoke with Moran by phone.
"Mr. Moran, I'm fine, especially thanks to you. I appreciate that very much," Robin Edgerton said as he spoke to Moran. "It is deeply felt and I really, really appreciate that."
Anyone interested in donating for the family to replace their van, can contact Trinity Lutheran Church.
