DETROIT -- Several local baby furniture stores have shut their doors, leaving several expectant couples without a nursery.
Twenty-seven year old Erin Moran and her husband, Brent, will welcome their first child, a son, in September.
In March, the Birmingham couple paid about $2,000 for several pieces of furniture from Baby's Room.
The couple said they were expecting to hear from the Novi store and started getting worried when they didn't.
"I started calling a couple weeks ago, just to see when it was coming in," Brent Moran said. "They said it was going to be about 10 days, that the truck was almost there for delivery."
But last week, the Moran's said the store called them and told them their furniture was at the warehouse.
The couple said they have not heard from the company or seen any of the furniture they ordered yet.
"They have my furniture and they have my money," Brent Moran said.
Erin Moran said the situation is stressful and she isn't sure if she should go out and buy more furniture.
Baby's Room has four metro Detroit locations - Auburn Hills, Clinton Township, Novi and Taylor.
Local 4 went to several of the locations; only to find locked doors and signs that said the business was closed for inventory.
At the Taylor store, Ellen Crider said her sister spent $1,500 on furniture from the business.
"They live in Ohio, so they came on Friday to pick it up and they went to the warehouse to pick it up and the warehouse was closed," Crider said. "They came to the store and the store was closed."
Crider said she and her sister have been calling all weekend but have not received any response.
The Better Business Bureau has reported received complaints for the business.
"We are trying to work with the owner to get those delivered," said local BBB Public Affairs Director Tim Burns. "So, if you do have a problem, contact your local BBB and we'll see if we can resolve the matter."
After the story ran on Local 4 News the Baby's Room sent a written response:
On Tuesday, June 16, 2009 a beloved Michigan business filed for relief under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code, represented by the firm of Thornbladh Martin PLLC.The president of the Southeastern Michigan franchise of the Baby's room stated:
"We are very sorry this turned into this. We tried to stay in business for the best interests of this community. We didn't receive any funds from the government. We cut our payroll. We cut our expenses. We tried to stay afloat. We fought on as long as we could."
The national franchise, USA Baby, was forced into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in the northern district of Illinois in 2008. The Detroit filing is the fifth bankruptcy by a franchise following that bankruptcy.
Creditors are asked to direct all inquiries toward the law firm. Direct contact with the Baby's Room, its officers, owners, and employers for the purpose of collecting a debt is forbidden by Section 362 of the Bankruptcy Code, unless the Bankruptcy Court grants permission. Violation can lead to serious sanctions by the bankruptcy court.
