Michigan Confirms 5 H1N1 Deaths

Madison Heights Officer Died From Virus

POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009
UPDATED: 4:36 pm EDT June 18,2009

Five people in Michigan have died from H1N1, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.

In Macomb, a 28-year-old man and two 53-year-old women have died. In Oakland County, a 44-year-old man died Monday. And a 44-year-old Roscommon man died on June 15.

On Thursday Michigan officials confirmed that the 28-year-old Madison Heights police officer died from H1N1, also known as the swine flu.

The MDCH said Thursday that Ryan Settlemoir of Macomb County, like most of the other H1N1 flu victims, had other underlying health conditions such as asthma and high blood pressure.

He died last Friday morning.

The state said it's now only tracking the most severe cases of the H1N1 virus, so Michigan's numbers reflect a small portion of the big picture.

Michigan had 655 confirmed cases of swine flu as of last week.

Hundreds packed Antioch Baptist Church in Warren Tuesday to remember Settlemoir.

Settlemoir worked as an officer in Madison Heights for the past seven years.

He is a husband and a father of a 4-year-old son and 2-year-old twin girls.

"You have to cherish the gift. He sent a message to all of us," said Warren Police Officer Brian Wojnowki said at his funeral.

Settlemoir died at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

He was one of about 20 employees in the department who got sick in late May and early this month.
