NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. -- A grand jury has begun its work which could lead to a decision whether charges will be filed in the stabbing deaths of a New Baltimore couple.
Ronald and Christine Jabalee were found beaten and stabbed in their New Baltimore home’s garage in October 2006.
Almost three years after they were found dead, police executed new search warrants in the case on Friday.
Rescue 4 has learned at least 10 people, including relatives and business associates, were subpoenaed to testify.
The couple’s death garnered attention after detectives revealed that a message was found near the couple, written in Christine Jabalee’s blood. It read, “SSEUIC.”
Police searched the Clinton Township home of Ron Jabalee, the slain couple’s son, and confiscated a computer.
Rescue 4 has also learned that another computer was taken during a police search of RJ Meats in Detroit’s Eastern Market. The company was owned by the Jabalee’s and is now run by their children.
Legal sources told Rescue 4 that just because search warrants were executed, it doesn’t mean the residents or people who work at the meat shop are suspects or the focus of the investigation.
A 17-member jury was seated on Wednesday.
The jury will not decide whether anyone is guilty or innocent, only if there's enough evidence to send a suspect to trial.
Once the grand jury has heard testimony, it is not on a strict timetable to decide if charges should be filed. The decision could come within hours, days or weeks of the conclusion of testimony.
Robbin Bates grew up in New Baltimore and said she welcomes the new developments in the case.
“Devastating. You don’t expect something like that in a small town like this, it’s a close community and when something like this happens it affects everybody,” she said.
The family declined to comment.
