MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. -- A sculpture of a nude man has been removed from a public area in front of a Mount Clemens art center following complaints.
Mayor Barb Dempsey told Local 4, "We had received complaints from pastors and churches who expressed concern about their children. I had grandparents call me saying 'I'm not coming down here to bring my grandchildren if that's up there because I don't want to have to explain that."
The anatomically correct statue was moved inside the Anton Art Center.
Nude Sculpture To Be RemovedCity Manager Doug Anderson told the Macomb Daily city officials felt the 7-foot-tall sculpture was too risque, especially with more than 300,000 people expected to come into town for this weekend's Stars and Stripes Festival.
Gloria Haller, who lives in Mount Clemens, said she saw the statue and wondered how long it would be before someone complained. "There's a time and a place for everything and the place for that kind of art is not out in the public eye."
But not all residents agree. "If you look at various European artists, the body was a very beautiful thing and it's not a big deal," Cynthia DeLavega.
Titled "Walking Man," the sculpture was put in place on Monday and removed a day later.
Artist Carl Goines, who created "Walking Man" told Local 4, "I'm disappointed it's been moved, but I'm glad it's still in Mount Clemens and it's in a prominent location in the art center so that's great."
