DETROIT -- The 2009 Target Fireworks were a hit.
Thousands of people lined the riverfront, some securing their spots early in the morning Wednesday to watch as 30 tons of explosives shot across the sky.
However, the crowds were a little thinner than usual because of the sweltering temperatures.
But fireworks enthusiasts said they came prepared with plenty of water and had a wonderful night.
"We have water, and pop and those cookies and fudge aren't mine -- only the fruit," laughed Anissa Ellis as she tried to keep cool.
But Kenny Smith, who watched the fireworks from Hart Plaza, said he didn't mind the heat.
"They are great. They are really loud too. You could actually feel the heat coming toward you," said Smith.
The Detroit police said the night went smooth. A mobile police unit set up shop on Jefferson Avenue and hundreds of Detroit officers and plain-clothes officers cruised the streets to control the swarming crowds.
Crews spent the night Thursday cleaning up the mess that was left behind.
