Child Drowns At Madison Heights Hotel

Victim Was 6-Year-Old Girl

POSTED: Wednesday, June 24, 2009
UPDATED: 1:06 am EDT June 25, 2009

The Madison Heights police are trying to piece together the drowning death of a 6-year-old girl at the Knights Inn Hotel in Madison Heights on Wednesday night.

Police were dispatched to the drowning around 8:15 p.m. She was immediately transported to St. John Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Witnesses said the girl and her family had recently checked into the hotel and had been in-and-out of the pool all day.

Witnesses said that a 15-year-old girl was watching the child for most of the day.

"I came out and I went to my room, dried off and went back to my car to get my clothes, and then somebody started hollering that her baby was drowning," said Knights Inn guest Alexandra Cullens.

A busload of people from the National Baptist Convention was staying at the hotel at the time.

A pastor heard the screams and tried to administer CPR, but it was too late.

The victim and her family were not part of the National Baptist Convention group, witnesses told Local 4.
