DEARBORN, Mich. -- Police investigators are reconstructing the scene of a deadly accident involving a Dearborn police officer Monday.
The officer was heading to assist police chasing a stolen car when he collided with a white 2002 Volkswagen at Rotunda and Military streets around 4:50 p.m., Local 4 reported. The Volkswagen was entering the intersection form the Ford Motor Co. Truck Development lot when it was struck by the marked patrol car, according to police.
The driver of the Volkswagen, William Vesper Owen IV, 35, of Canton, Mich., was transported to Oakwood Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m., police said.
Witnesses said the officer had overhead emergency lights activated while he proceeded through a red light about one-half mile west of Pelham Street, police said. Witnesses told Local 4 that the officer was driving at a high rate of speed.
"They should drive responsibly," resident Bob Donlon said. "But who knows how this happened?"
The officer was transported to Oakwood Hospital where he was being treated for head injuries.
The officer was reportedly responding to a scene about 5 miles away. Police were chasing two suspects in a stolen sport utility vehicle at Telegraph and Michigan Avenue, Local 4 reported. The chase reportedly ended when the SUV lost control and crashed into a yard. The suspects were arrested without incident.
The Dearborn Police Department and Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the crash.
