Deputy Shoots, Kills Man

Sheriff's Deputy Shoots A Man Overnight, Finds Suspect's Mother Dead

POSTED: Sunday, June 28, 2009
UPDATED: 11:53 am EDT June 28, 2009

A 43-year-old man and his mother are dead and a Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy is on paid administrative leave after a fire that lead to a shooting early Sunday morning.

It happened in the 1200 block of Pageant Street, about 10 minutes after midnight.

Dispatchers said they received a 911 call reporting the fire. The caller said they saw a man leave the house, carrying a gun. The caller also said he believed the man’s mother was still inside the home.

When deputies arrived, they found the man, matching the description, a short distance away at Wenell and Red Leaf streets in Ypsilanti Township.

When deputies confronted the man, a standoff occurred and the suspect was shot by a Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy.

The man was transported to St. Josephs Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

Back at the home, deputies found a 66-year-old woman, who has been identified as the suspect's mother, dead. Foul play is suspected in her death.

State fire investigators have been asked to investigate the fire and Michigan State Police will investigate the shooting.

The identities of the mother and son are being withheld at this time.
