Detroit Police Shoot Arson Suspect

POSTED: Sunday, June 28, 2009
UPDATED: 10:50 am EDT June 29, 2009

A 49-year-old man is dead after witnesses said he started a fire in a Detroit apartment building before being fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Police said Michael Williams was fed up with bugs and rats in his apartment and fired at three people from an apartment unit, wounding two of them. One person is in critical condition. The other is expected to recover.

Witnesses said Williams then set his own apartment on fire and fired shots at firefighters and police who responded. No one was hit and police fatally shot the gunman.
