Woman: Ex-Husband Shoots Ex-Boyfriend

New Baltimore Woman Says Ex-Boyfriend Was Stalking Her

POSTED: Monday, June 29, 2009
UPDATED: 7:09 pm EDT June 29, 2009

A New Baltimore woman said her ex-husband shot her ex-boyfriend multiple times Sunday while she was in a back room with her young daughter.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, said she and her ex-husband both live in the Lakeview Trailer Court, located in the 37000 block of Main Street.

The woman said she and her daughter were watching a movie him when her ex-boyfriend from five years ago showed up.

"I just heard the screen door opening, I ran to the bedroom with my daughter," she said.

The woman said her ex-boyfriend has been stalking her since he was released from jail in January after a DUI charge.

"He was very jealous. It was like day and night, one time nice, then crazy. I couldn't read him," she said. "I was scared. I was terrified. Thought he was going to hurt everybody."

The woman said she took her daughter into a back room, and that she heard gunshots a few minutes later. She said she emerged to see her ex-boyfriend staggering away before collapsing on the road.

She said she doesn't know what exactly happened, or if jealousy had anything to do with it.

"I have no clue, I couldn't tell you, I just know from past experiences with him he is very violent," the woman said.

Neighbor Paul Labaeu said he knows the woman's ex-husband and said he's a nice guy who was probably acting out of self defense.

"It's taken a toll on him, He's getting by. Did what he had to do. I would have done the same thing," Labaeu said.

New Baltimore police said they were called to the address at about 10:30 on the report of a home invasion and found the ex-boyfriend, a 36-year-old Fair Haven resident, shot multiple times in the chest and torso area.

Police said he was taken to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.

Police said the ex-husband told them the ex-boyfriend had kicked down the door.

After an initial investigation, police said the 44-year-old ex-husband was released. Police said the 9 mm gun was registered.
