Woodlawn Cemetery Donates Crypt

A metro Detroit cemetery said it will donate a crypt to help preserve the memorial Michael Jackson fans have built for him in Motown.

The memorial of flowers, messages, candles and mementoes, has been building outside "Hitsville USA," the Motown Museum, since word of the famed performer's death last week.

"Michael has been a huge part of growing up for me," said fan Whitney Walker, who drove into the city from Pontiac to visit the memorial. "I wonder if Michael knew when he died that there were so many people that still loved him?"

The museum's Lina Stephens said visitors have been maintaing the memorial daily.

"People have been coming back to make sure things are straight," Stephens said.

After Jackson is laid to rest, the memorial is expected to be moved to the side of the museum. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.

But even furthrer, the directors at Woodlawn Cemetery said they are donating a crypt so the memorial can be kept locally into the future.

"That way people can come and see the items that they've spent a lot of money and time on and hard work on memorializing, will be safe and preserved," said the cemetery's Tracy Fowlkes-Elijah.

"I think that's awesome ... I think that's wonderful," Walker said when she heard about the memorial's preservation.

Details are still be worked out, but a ceremony is expected sometime soon.
