DEXTER, Mich. -- A wrong way driver on Interstate 94 caused a crash that shut down a 2-mile section of the freeway in Dexter Thursday afternoon.
The eastbound lanes of I-94 between Baker and Zeeb roads were closed for about an hour after Michigan State Police said a driver crossed over lanes into oncoming traffic and caused a multiple-car crash.
The driver, 33-year-old Brian Hartley, was in shock after the accident. Hartley, who works for the Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Department, was on his way home to Jackson.
“I guess I had problems with my sugar and I got on the highway going the wrong way,” said Hartley.
He has been a diabetic for 25 years.
“After I was in the accident, I didn’t even know I was in an accident. I was trying to start my truck and leave. I didn’t even know my truck was smashed up. It wouldn’t start, it wouldn’t do nothing,” said Hartley.
Police said Hartley hit several other cars while driving the wrong way, but no one was seriously hurt.
“When I left work I felt fine. At lunch I checked my sugar and it was a little low so I didn’t take a shot of course and a couple hours later it’s way too low,” said Hartley
Medics checked Hartley’s blood sugar at the scene of the accident and brought it back up. Hartley said he was alright after being checked. Hartley was not ticketed, but said he expects to be contacted by the Secretary of State’s office.
“I’m just glad everybody else is alright,” said Harley.
