MELVINDALE, Mich. -- Melvindale City Council may make it illegal to puff on a cigarette while watching a little league baseball game at Deluca Field.
The council proposed that the city put up "no smoking" signs in the park and that if police see people violating the ordinance, they could issue a $50 ticket to violators.
Melvindale councilwoman and Mayor Pro-Tem Stacy Striz suggested the signage last month after she saw a lot of people smoking at the park during a little league game.
Stritz suggested that since state and county laws say that smoking isn't allowed on school property or in a public building, it should not be allowed in Deluca, which is a public park.
The council debated Wednesday night whether the bleachers could be considered a public structure and thereby fit into the public building category.
Melvindale Little Baseball League President Carl Louvet agrees with the smoking ban. He said the children should not be exposed to the second hand smoke.
Louvet added that it's not fair to the children who are bothered by the smoke. They cannot get up and leave the park if they don't like being exposed. They have to stay until their parents are ready, said Louvet.
A little league baseball player told Local 4 the smoke doesn't necessarily bother him, but it bothers him when the adults are smoking rather than watching the game.
The council is expected to vote on the smoking ban on July 15.
