Gunman Holds Police At Bay For Hours

No Injuries In Standoff

POSTED: Friday, July 3, 2009
UPDATED: 3:46 pm EDT July 3, 2009

A standoff has ended peacefully in Romulus.

According to Taylor police, officers were attempting to pull over a car on Interstate 94 around 2:30 a.m. on Friday.

The car crashed on Wickham Road in Romulus near the Best Western Inn.

The driver got out of the car, put a handgun to his head and told police to 'Get away or I will kill myself,'" Acting Chief Michael St. Andre said.

A passenger in the vehicle was taken into custody.

With the gun to his head, the man walked into a room he had rented at that hotel, just north of I-94 and Metro Airport.

The hotel was partially evacuated during the standoff.

Hotel guests said they were not told what was going on, but were told to leave their rooms quickly and quietly.

The man is approximately 25 years old.

He is in custody and is expected to be charged with fleeing and eluding.

No one was injured.
