Jackson Fans In Detroit Watch Memorial

Charles H. Wright Museum Will Broadcasts Memorial On Screen

POSTED: Sunday, July 5, 2009
UPDATED: 7:43 pm EDT July 7, 2009

A public celebration of Michael Jackson's life and legacy in Detroit has wrapped up, with any sadness over the pop star's death far outweighed by affection for him.

Tony Spearman, a spokesman for the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, said about 600 people attended Tuesday afternoon's broadcast of the memorial service for Jackson in Los Angeles. Most filled the main auditorium to watch the service on a large screen, while the rest watched on televisions in a downstairs conference room.

Jackson videos were shown one after another in the auditorium amid clapping and shouting. The atrium outside the auditorium had seven erasable boards set up for people to autograph.

Some of the messages read, "Go in peace," "Hevan couldn't wait R.I.P. King of Pop," "You're bad" and "Never Can Say Goodbye Teach The Angels the Moonwalk." Another says, "Thank you for your love, care and time that we shared at Children's Hospital of Detroit July 8, 1998."

Spearman said the boards will be displayed as part of a Motown Records exhibit later this year.

There's also a "green screen" that people could pose in front of to create a photo montage of themselves with Jackson. The going rate was $20 for two 6-by-8 inch photos.

"He was the greatest entertainer in the world," said fan Nicholas Austin. "He had a profound effect on everybody's life."

Fan Kim Owens said Jackson inspired him to work in the music industry.

"I have every album that he has, DVDs, CDs," Owens said.

Jackson entertained fans for 40 years and even the youngest ones are celebrating his life.

Several children accompanied their parents to the showing.

Nine-year-old Tayler Douglas of Detroit said she likes current artists like Beyonce but she became a Jackson fan because her mother was one.

She said her mother cried when she learned of Jackson's death and she was sad as well, but will always like him.

Seven-year-old London Jackson said she liked Michael Jackson because they shared a name and that he made people happy and feel good.

Fan Watonya Sexton said she wanted her grandchildren to see the memorial because she considers it history in the making.

"This is going to be history. It is stuff that they can look back on in life, when they have children," Sexton said.

Many famous past and current Detroiters participated in the memorial, including Stevie Wonder, Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson. But no members from the Grammy-winning Winans family said they would be going. Madonna is out of the country and Aretha Franklin said she had other commitments.

Detroit City Council member Martha Reeves said she loved Jackson but couldn't make the trip either.

“I have no plans to leave Detroit. I just came back,” Reeves said. “So, I’m here and I’m here to take care of council business.”

A candlelight vigil to remember Jackson's life and legacy was held after the pop star's death at the original home of Motown Records in Detroit.

The historic Hitsville USA building was the launching pad for the late pop superstar's career.

People have visited Hitsville following Jackson's death to pay their respects to the international icon.
