MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. -- The Mount Clemens City Council introduced legislation Monday night aimed at dealing with dangerous pets, especially pit bulls.
The ordinance, which requires owners to provide a 6-foot-high kennel when the dog is outside, keep the dog muzzled and leased when outside the kennel and purchase public liability insurance, will be voted on by commissioners July 20.
City Attorney Michael Murray told the Macomb Daily that his staff had collected data indicating pit bulls and other dangerous animals were a risk and pose harm and fear to the residents.
Eastpointe officials are eyeing similar legislation after an 11-month-old was mauled to death in April by the family pit bull. The child was attacked while sleeping on his parent's bed. The boy's father came into the room and shot the dog, but not before it killed the child.
