14-Year-Old Leads Police On Joy Ride

Chase Caught On Tape

POSTED: Wednesday, July 8, 2009
UPDATED: 10:55 am EDT July 8, 2009

A 14-year-old's joy ride was caught on tape.

According to police, the teen stole his father's sport utility vehicle and took his 10-year-old brother and 12-year-old cousin on a wild ride through the streets Howell.

Officers attempted to pull over the teen when they saw him turn left at a right turn only intersection.

Police said when the teen saw the police car, he took off, driving more than 100 miles per hour.

The video showed the teen running through stop signs, almost hitting several cars and crossing into oncoming traffic until he reached a dead-end road with an embankment.

He struck the embankment and launched 10 feet off the ground, hitting trees.

"I got my hands up. It's not my fault. It's Austin's fault," one teen could be heard on tape.

The teen told police they were going to the Dairy Queen and said they would have made it if they had turned right instead of left.

No one was seriously injured.

The teen could be charged with driving without a license, reckless driving and eluding an officer.
