MONROE, Mich. -

Organizers are inviting members of the public to Remember the Raisin this weekend in Monroe.

The Michigan Commission on the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is hosting a series of events beginning Saturday marking the 200th anniversary of a pair of War of 1812 battles fought in the area.

Following a skirmish days earlier, the Battle of the River Raisin in January 1813 saw British soldiers and their American Indian allies overwhelm U.S. troops, leading to the rallying cry, "Remember the Raisin!"

The governor-appointed Michigan Commission on the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 has the job of encouraging, planning and developing activities, events, programs, observances and services appropriate to commemorate Michigan's role in the war.
