2 families displaced by Westland apartment complex fire

Man being called hero for knocking on doors; No injuries reported

WESTLAND, Mich. – Two families were displaced Saturday night after a fire at an apartment complex in Westland, but a man is being called a hero for making sure everyone was out of the complex in time.

There are two units one on top of the other at the Scotsdale apartment complex. The family on the bottom unit smelled smoke and ran upstairs to warn neighbors. As soon as the family got out, family members realized others were still inside the building.

Within minutes, the apartment complex was engulfed in flames.

As family members searched for loved ones, one man headed back toward the flames. Families with young children escaped with just the clothes on their back.

As people stood in the snow, they saw a man trying to jump from a second-floor window. That's when Andrew Robertson ran back inside. One person said he's one of the most humble heroes you'll meet.

In total, Robertson knocked on 23 doors at the apartment complex. Thanks to his quick thinking, there were no injuries in the fast-moving fire.

The two families displaced were not able to go back home Saturday night due to significant damage to the lower apartment. Those families told Local 4 News that neighbors have donated blankets and food, as the families tried to figure out where to spend the night.

The cause of the fire remains unknown as the investigation continues. The family who lives on the first floor said they saw smoke coming from vents and that was the last thing they saw before running out.
