2 killed in hit-and-run crash on 7 Mile Road

Driver of Jeep Cherokee fled scene

DETROIT – Detroit police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed two men Saturday morning on Detroit’s east side.

A white Chevy Suburban collided with a white Jeep Cherokee on 7 Mile Road near Yonka Street about 3:30 a.m.

Mario Davis and Demetrius "Meech" Betts were killed in the crash.

Davis (left) and Betts (right) were uncle and nephew. The two were a year apart in age and always together.

"They were like brothers," Jeanete Kowalski said.

Betts, the driver of the Suburban, was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. Davis, the passenger, was stuck in the SUV when the vehicle went up in flames. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the white Jeep Cherokee fled the scene.

"That let's me know you're a coward to run and leave," Kowalski said. "A real person will stay there."

Family members can't believe the man in the other car could leave the two victims behind in desperate need of help.

"You need to surrender and turn yourself in. You killed two people," Kowalski said.

It's unclear if alcohol was a factor, but family members are devastated by their loss and how the two men's lives came to a tragic end.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help the family with expenses.
