2 masked gunmen attack hotel clerk during robbery attempt in Sterling Heights

Clerk suffers minor cut to head during incident at Super 8 on Van Dyke Avenue

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Sterling Heights police say a hotel clerk is recovering after being hit in the head with a gun Tuesday night during a robbery attempt by two masked men.

Police said the men went into the Super 8 at 34550 Van Dyke Ave. around 11 p.m. and confronted the clerk. One of them jumped the counter and repeatedly hit her in the head with his handgun, police said.

The men tried to find cash, but left empty-handed. A K-9 tried to track the men, but was unsuccessful.

The clerk was treated at Beaumont Hospital in Troy for a minor cut to her head. She has been released.

Guests at the Super 8 were walking in as this was unfolding.

"As the robbery was coming down a couple other patrons came down and were confronted by the second gunman who was in the lobby. They were smart, stayed out of it, and were just good witnesses after the fact," said Lt. Dave Smith.

Police were at the hotel within minutes.

"When our officers arrived we did a K-9 track, which tracked over to an apartment complex off of 15 Mile, to an open parking spot. We're not able to locate the suspects at this time," said Smith.

The only descriptions released by police are:

--Black man, stocky build, wore a dark hooded sweatshirt and tan coat.

--Black man, stocky build, wore a black leather coat

Both men were wearing black ski masks and gloves.

Those who witnesses the robbery are just glad no one was killed.

"Thank God, you know, that it wasn't as serious as it could have been, because she could have died. We all could have lost our lives," said Brandon Moore, who witnessed this crime.

Anyone with information on the robbery attempt is asked to contact the Sterling Heights Police Department at 586-446-2800.
