2 men rescued in fire at independent living home

Fire happened at home near Detroit-Highland Park border where 7 people lived

DETROIT – Detroit firefighters rescued two men after a fire at an independent living home where seven people lived.

It happened around 7 p.m. Saturday on Englewood Street near the Detroit-Highland Park border.

The people who live at the home have a mental illness like schizophrenia or are bipolar. They are able to live independently, but require assistance. Most of them were watching television downstairs when the fire started.

They consider themselves more like family. For many of them, Saturday night will be the first time in years they're apart.

The facility near Caniff and Oakland was completely gutted.

The acting chief said two people were injured. One person was taken to a hospital. The second man who was injured became startled by the number of first responders and ran away. His injuries were not life-threatening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. It's believed the fire started in the back of the home.

The people who lived there will be relocated to other homes within the organization
