2 officers disciplined after drunken driving crash involving off-duty police in Battle Creek

Police in Battle Creek have disciplined two members of the department following a drunken driving crash involving an off-duty officer.

The Battle Creek Enquirer and WOOD-TV report police on Thursday released a report about the July 31 crash that said the officer was driving 100 mph before striking a curb, two mailboxes and two signs.

The report says he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.285 percent.

The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08 percent.

The 37-year-old officer has been suspended for 20 days.

A prosecutor is deciding whether to bring charges.

Another off-duty officer also was in the car.

The department says there was a lack of a complete investigation, so a lieutenant has been demoted.

Chief Jackie Hampton, however, says there was no attempted cover-up in the case.
