2 teens killed in drive-by shooting on Detroit's west side

2 found shot to death, 1 in stable condition after injured by flying glass; all 3 found on Southfield Freeway Service Drive north of Joy Road in Detroit

DETROIT – Two teens were killed in a drive-by shooting Thursday afternoon. Their bodies were found on the Southfield Freeway Service Drive just north of Joy Road on Detroit's west side.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office says a 19-year-old man and an 17-year-old woman were found shot to death.

A third victim is an 18-year-old woman who was injured from flying glass. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was in stable condition.

The three victims were inside a vehicle at the corner of Cathedral Street and the service drive. It was traveling east on Cathedral Street when the driver, the 19-year-old man, was about to turn left on the service drive, witnesses told Local 4. That's when, witnesses say, someone shot at the vehicle from another vehicle which had pulled up alongside.

Police are calling it a drive-by shooting. The shooter was using a high-powered rifle, possibly an AK-47.

Police said it appears to have started as a minor argument which escalated.

"It appears to have been a dispute between one of the fatal victims inside the vehicle and a person who was at this location," said Dwane Blackmon, of the Detroit Police Homicide unit. "One of the things I'm being told is that this was a minor dispute that ended up turning into two fatal (disputes)."

The man and the woman who were shot and killed were in the front seats. Two women were in the back seat. One of them was hurt by flying glass fragments.

No arrests have been made.

"It seems to me that what we're lacking is the ability to resolve conflicts without shooting and this particular incident, from what I'm being told, was something that, I believe, could have been handled without shots being fired at people," said Blackmon.

Police believe at least two people traveling in a black sports utility vehicle were involved in the deadly shooting.
